A Guide to Making Your Photo Shoot A Work of Art

Frequently Asked Questions

A Boudoir Session is a completely different experience than regular family portraits for most of you, it’s a once in a lifetime experience and, as such, many questions may come to mind. The following information has been designed to answer some of the frequently asked questions we are asked at Silk and Lace Boudoir Portraits - from wardrobe selection to picking up your final products. If you have any questions that are not answered below, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are more than happy to speak with you on an individual basis.

What is Boudoir Photography ?

Boudoir portraiture has been gaining immense popularity in recent years. As women, we spend endless amounts of time and money pampering ourselves with beauty products and services, clothing, accessories, fitness and even plastic surgery to make us feel beautiful. By investing in portraiture, we can capture and document your beauty to treasure for a lifetime.

Regardless of age or body type, we specialize in offering all women an incredible opportunity to commission their own personal collection of stunning, modern boudoir portraits. Flattering your best features, Silk and Lace Boudoir Portraits provides you with something truly unique to show how beautiful you are. While our sessions are designed to create a personal, romantic gift for your significant other to cherish for a lifetime, they are truly designed for you.

Do you have a studio?

Yes! It a great little place out of the way in the middle of a country nature preserve.

Are you the photographer? Will any men be present?

I am a female photographer, and my stylist and assistant are also women. And no men will be present in the camera room. I hear from a lot of clients the first question their significant other asks is “who took these?!” Whew! You can say a female photographer did.

What Products do you offer and how much is an Intimate Session ?

To view our current Investment Guide which outlines all of our products and pricing, please send an email request to [email protected]

My session is booked - how do I prepare ?

In preparation for your shoot, please think of the following things:
Hair touch-ups, waxing, eyebrow shaping, manicure, and pedicure.

Once your session is booked, we will send you our Client Guide which goes into further detail regarding preparation.

Do you provide hair and makeup services ?

Yes we do. You can choose to purchase both hair and makeup services. We strongly encourage having both done by professionals - it really makes a difference in the final images.

Is hair and makeup extra?

Yes, you would pay the makeup artist directly for their services. They only accept cash so please plan accordingly.

What should I bring to my shoot ? Do you supply wardrobe ?

No we don’t supply wardrobe but have some great suggestions on what to purchase and bring with you. Please bring a variety of lingerie, shoes and jewelry. We will work with you to create the look you want. When you are choosing lingerie, consider choosing more than one set to get a variety of looks.

Lingerie can include bra and panty sets, a corset, teddy, chemise, camisole, garters, thigh high stockings and robes. While black is the standard in sexy, all colors are great and give a nice variety of looks to your final images.

For brides, consider bringing your favorite white lingerie.

Other items to bring include a variety of high heels, high boots, jewelry, scarves, hats, ties. Feel free to bring anything with you to accessorize your shoot and make it a more personalized experience. A piece of your mate’s favorite apparel - shirt and tie perhaps or a sports jersey - he’ll love it ! Have a look through our galleries for inspiration.

I’m a little uncomfortable about nudity

Nudity is certainly not necessary and we will not push you to go further than you feel comfortable with. Sexy isn’t always about how much you show, it’s all about how you show it ! We feel that leaving something to the imagination is much sexier than baring it all.

I have a little problem area that I don’t like about by body - is there anything you can do?

At your consultation we will go over what parts of your body you want to showcase, and what parts you want to camouflage.  Flattering your best features, Silk and Lace Boudoir Portraits provides you with something truly unique to show how beautiful you are. Every woman is very different and has something incredible to capture.

Our advanced retouching includes skin perfecting, body contouring and feature enhancement. Every detail is covered from wrinkles to acne, scars, cellulite and stretch marks. You don’t have to worry about these little imperfections. We have everything covered.

If you have a particular problem area that you're not happy with, let us know. Our advanced posing techniques are designed to emphasize the positives and disguise problem areas. In addition we can perform a little “digital liposuction” in the retouching stage. We will not however completely change the shape of your body - after all that just wouldn’t be you !

I’ve had my session - what a blast ! When do I get to see my images?

Within about 14 days of your session we will invite you back to the studio for your private premier… We again encourage you to bring your closest friend to help you decide.

How many images will I have to choose from ?

Many images are captured during your session. Afterwards, each image is put through a careful selection process. You will see only the images that meet the standards of Silk and Lace Boudoir Portraits. Images that do not meet these standards are removed permanently during the selection process.

Do you retouch the images?

Absolutely! Let’s face it, even the most “perfect” woman could use a little help in photographs. I don’t go crazy and take you down a few dress sizes, but I do smooth/even skin tones, remove dark under eye circles and remove blemishes. I also do some minor fixes. By “fixes” I mean, removing slight bumps or lines or even little bulges that may appear due to certain poses or lingerie. But it’s rarely anything you would even notice that I did, BUT if I hadn’t you probably would have noticed those things immediately. Make sense?

My opinion on boudoir editing is that these sessions are part reality and part fantasy. You’ll look stunning, and guess what- it will still be YOU!

Will my images be shown on your website or in your studio ?

The images shown on our website and in-studio displays are shown with the client’s permission only. At the end of your session you will be given an optional model release form that is completely voluntary to sign. If you choose not to sign the release, your images will not be seen by anyone other than employees of Silk and Lace Boudoir Portraits. We fully understand and respect the privacy of our clients.

How much does it cost?

I have a range of sessions and products. However the starting investment for a session and images in an album is around $900 before taxes but most clients invest more. Hair and Makeup are separate.
Here is a link to my Investment Page.

But I just want a couple pictures and don’t need a whole session can this be done?

Unfortunately I can not accommodate this sort of need. Each sessions takes a lot of prep time regardless of what is ordered in the end. I do not have the schedule nor means to do shorter shoots. Besides I have had a few clients who did not believe they were photogenic and thought they would only purchase one or two prints… they all ended up with albums and wall portraits!

Do you do payment plans?

Yes, and they can be customized to your needs, but I do not process orders until a 50% payment is made.

What is a retainer?

A retainer is a non-refundable amount that holds your session date and time. I had to put this in place due to client no shows. When a clients does not show up for their scheduled session and they have not paid a retainer, then I am out the money I could have made from a serious client whom I had to turn away because the session was already booked. Not to mention the cost of the Hair and Makeup artists that I now must pay. To sum it up- it guarantees that you are serious about partaking in such an amazing experience! *Don’t forget, this money is applied in FULL to your total investment, unless you’re a no show then it’s mine to keep. (I don’t want that any more than you do!)

So then what’s a session fee?

A session fee covers my time and talent as your custom photographer. This includes time spent from our initial contact, consultations, and assistant, the session, my artistic eye and skills, editing, ordering session and any expenses I have to do all this. There is so much more to each session than the 1-3 hours I spend behind the lens!

What if I can’t make my session?

If the reason is legit and you give me at least five business days notice, then I am happy to reschedule. However this is at my discretion and there may be a rescheduling fee in place as I have a team that works with me and some will need to be paid regardless if they do not have sufficient notice. Retainers are non refundable, but I am a reasonable person and we will work it out so that we are both happy!

Do you take credit cards and/or personal checks?

Yes and yes. I have a merchant account and can accept all major credit cards. I will accept personal checks but they must have time to clear before your session date and before I can process your order. I also accept cash-

I’d love to give a session as a gift. Can I do that ?

Certainly ! Gift Certificates are available for session fees and/or products.

Can I bring a friend to my session?

Yes, but I don’t recommend it. Having a friend there seems to make girls more nervous. Nobody wants an audience while they are trying to look sexy, seriously we crack up about it enough… the last thing you need is someone watching your every move or chiming in about what you are or aren’t doing. This is all about you, so relax and enjoy it!

How long until I receive my images and/or album?

In most cases your studio viewing/ordering appointment will be  within two weeks from your session date.  At this time we will make all order preparations.  Albums take the longest to prepare, complete and deliver. Albums can take up to 6 weeks from the order date/preview time and assembly.

Please keep these times in mind if you are planning a gift for someone. It is always better to book a session with plenty of time to spare in case delivery times take longer than expected. Estimate 6-8 weeks from the first consultation, although it’s usually sooner.
